Gaza aid flotilla delays departure from Tunisian port after drone attacks

/n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Global Sumud Flotilla on Wednesday said that one of its boats, the British-flagged \u201cAlma,\u201d was hit by a drone as it was docked in the Sidi Bou Said port in Tunisian waters. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group shared security camera footage showing people on board shouting \u201cfire\u201d and pointing to the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Projectiles on fire fell on the deck, exploding and setting off a blaze. Organisers said all passengers and crew were unharmed. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Activists say the vessel known as \u201cThe Family\u201d was also struck on Monday night. This boat was carrying the most famous members of the flotilla, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and former Barcelona mayor, Ada Colau.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Alma and Family were the motherships of the mission, providing support and provisions to smaller vessels.<\/p>\n<p>Tunisian authorities said they were investigating the attacks.\u00a0<strong>\u201cAny attempt to block the flotilla would constitute a grave violation of international law and humanitarian principles,\u201d<\/strong> United Nations experts said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"widget incidents were not the first time activists trying to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza have come under attack.<\/p>\n<p>Another vessel said it was attacked by drones in May in international waters off Malta. <a href=https://www.africanews.com/"https:////www.africanews.com//2025//06//11//convoy-of-at-least-1500-activists-heads-to-gaza-to-challenge-israels-blockade///" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\"><strong>An overland convoy traveling across North Africa<\/strong><\/a> also attempted to reach the border but was blocked by security forces aligned with Egypt in eastern Libya.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Israeli authorities <a href=https://www.africanews.com/"https:////www.africanews.com//2025//06//11//israel-deports-greta-thunberg-other-activists-from-gaza-aid-flotilla///" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\"><strong>intercepted the Madleen aid vessel<\/strong><\/a> in international waters and detained its passengers - including Greta Thunberg and French-Palestinian MEP Rima Hassan - in Israel.<\/p>\n<p>James Griffin, a Global Sumud Flotilla participant from Scotland, said the group was determined to carry out its mission and enjoyed popular support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe know the dangers,\"<\/strong> he said. <strong>\"We go down to Gaza and we'll do our mission.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Global Sumud Flotilla is made of around 20 boats carrying humanitarian aid <a href=https://www.africanews.com/"https:////www.africanews.com//2025//09//01//flotilla-departs-barcelona-in-bid-to-break-gaza-blockade///" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\"><strong>that departed from Spain\u00a0on 1 September.<\/strong><\/a> It had planned a stop in Tunisia before sailing on to Gaza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Activists say they will try to depart Tunisia again Thursday, weather
